Truth & Tragedy  interview 07/07/22

1. Can you tell us about your band, and who’s your biggest influence?

We are Truth & Tragedy, a post-hardcore 5-piece from Bamberg, Germany. We’ve been inspired by bands like To Kill Achilles, Being As An Ocean and Casey, and have a raw, vulnerable, heavy sound.

2. Where do you draw your inspirations and ideas from?

Our songs often deal with issues like trauma, PTSD and alienation, inspired by our singer Aaron’s own experiences serving in the US Army in Afghanistan - both during the war and readjusting to civilian life on his return. So a lot of our songs deal with issues of mental health and substance abuse, and Aaron has a pretty raw and direct way of addressing these issues. It’s not all doom and gloom though! We love experimenting with different sub-genres, and we especially love putting our own spin on pop-punk, so we have quite a few more light-hearted songs to jump around to. So we generally draw from our own experiences in our music, but we also keep our eyes and ears open for inspiration elsewhere in the music scene!

3. What would you say is your band’s favourite song?

Our favourite song we’ve written so far is probably ‘Carcass’ - it’s fast paced and really fun to play, and ends in a pretty brutal scream! Aaron had a lot of fun with the lyrics too, and was inspired by old Western music and gun-slinger ballads for this dark song describing a “suicide by cop” shoot-out. 4.

4.Plans tour and festival wise for 2022?

We will be headlining the Friday of Wacken Foundation’s ‘Rock Das Ding’ festival in a couple of weeks which we’re stoked for, then have all sorts of shows coming up this summer and autumn! We’re especially excited to hit the road in September for our first European Tour, and have shows planned across Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Croatia, with more dates still to be announced! We’re already in the planning stages for a UK Tour in February 2023, and will be announcing another EU Tour next April focusing on Central and Western EU countries. Keep an eye on our socials (@truth_and_tragedy) for a city near you and come party with us!

5. What can we expect from Truth & Tragedy live?

We love playing live shows and it’s an excuse for us to jump around and act stupid! And chances are Aaron will spend more time in the crowd than up on stage!

6. What do you like best and worst about touring?

Because we formed right in the middle of Covid lockdowns, this September will be our first ever international tour! So at this point we can only guess. We bet the best thing will be playing our shows in all these weird and wonderful places we’ve never been before. The worst will probably be the 6-7 hour drives in a cramped bus with a bunch of stinking blokes - we think that novelty will wear off in the first few days. But we can’t wait to get on the road!

7. Which three bands would be your ultimate touring buddies?

Being As An Ocean, because they’re a huge influence for us and seem like awesome guys! Then Motley Crue, but back in their hayday… and Johnny Cash back when he was an outlaw.

8. What’s the most memorable concert you’ve been to and why?

Probably Elbriot festival a few years back - we went there to see some of our favourite bands like Beartooth, Skindred and Arch Enemy, and

saw Our Mirage there as the opening band. Fast forward a couple years, and our second ever show as Truth & Tragedy was opening a festival for Our Mirage! So that was a cool coincidence and was a nice introduction to our live career!

9. What do you feel has been your biggest accomplishment so far with Truth & Tragedy?

Our biggest accomplishment so far is definitely booking our tours - by this time next year we will have played in almost every country in Europe, and we are so psyched to finally get the chance to do this! When we started this project in the middle of Covid, like most bands, our chances of playing live shows seemed doomed. So now, for us to have so many exciting dates coming up is awesome, and we can’t wait to meet some of our fans - and hopefully make some new ones too! 10. Which are your two favourite albums of all time? It’s hard for all 5 of us to agree on only 2 albums, but we think we’ve come to a decision: ‘All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us’ by Architects and ‘Something To Remember Me By’ by To Kill Achilles.

11. Can you remember the first time you ever played live and how that felt?

We all started playing live shows many years ago, most of us back when we were at school - but that still doesn’t stop us getting nervous! Our first time playing as Truth & Tragedy was nerve-racking but really exciting - of course, no matter how much you practice together in a rehearsal room, it can’t prepare you for the feeling of a live show! And it was probably nerve-racking for a lot of bands finally getting back on the stage after 2 years of lockdown! So yeah our first show was a very special feeling, and we can’t wait to make up for lost time!

12. Growing up, which bands did you have on your bedroom wall?

Lots and lots of Avenged Sevenfold posters between us… Bon Jovi, Queen… and plenty of A Day To Remember too!

13. Who do you think influenced the world of Metal/Rock the most?

Ozzy, the Prince of Darkness himself. And he’s still going!! So metal.

14. What’s the most important thing to the band right now?

Well we’re focusing on our upcoming tours, and we are also finalising our upcoming releases for this year! We have a new pop-punk inspired single ready to release in the next few weeks, and are also polishing up our last tracks for our next EP to be released later in the year! So right now our focus is getting those wrapped up and ready to go before we hit the road!

15. If you could do a cover of any song, what would it be and why?

‘How You Remind Me’ by Nickelback - because Nickelback slaps!

16. Tell us why we should buy and listen to your band.

We have an awesome time writing our music, and we hope you’ll have an awesome time listening to it! Check out what we’ve been doing and reach out to us - we’d love to know what you think!

17. Four words to describe Truth & Tragedy:

Raw, vulnerable, honest, loud.
